Every day, an average person swallows about one litre of saliva.

But saliva isn’t just water — it is a complex biological fluid containing millions of microorganisms, including both beneficial and potentially pathogenic bacteria associated with dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral infections.

These microorganisms are continuously swallowed and enter the gastrointestinal tract, where they are exposed to normal digestive processes. At the same time, certain bacteria may gain access to the systemic circulation through inflamed gingival tissues or minor disruptions of the oral mucosa.
